The union, which also represents players from the United Soccer League, players from the Women’s National Basketball Association and other sports organizations, has sided with Major League Soccer in an ongoing labor dispute. The MLS Players Association was founded in April 2003 and ensures the protection and rights of former, current and future Major League Soccer players and promotes their best interests and strengthens their voice. Major League Soccer and the MLS Players Association have reached a new collective bargaining agreement after long negotiations. The new CBA was completed on February 8 and the union has been without a lockout of its players for 26 years. MLS players unanimously voted to ratify an amended Collective – Bargaining Agreement ( CBA) with the MLS to avoid a lockout by agreeing to a contract that runs the season through 2027.
ESPN reported that the board of governors of the MLS Players Association, composed of MLS Commissioner Don Garber and the respective Major Owners of the 27 MLS Clubs, has approved the proposal for a collective bargaining agreement. A tentative deal to overhaul the CBA was approved by the union board and bargaining committee by a 24-11 vote, according to sources. A majority of players’ union members and the approval of the MLS Board of Governors are required to advance the 2021 season in Major League Soccer.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber’s desire is some sort of response from players and the league on the CBA offer for 2021 Wednesday afternoon at his own news conference a day after more than a week of silence from the MLS Players Association and before he got it. In recent weeks, the MLS has threatened a lockout of its own players by teams owners demanding a new CBA to replace that signed last summer, which itself was replaced by a CBA that was approved but never ratified in February. The counter-offer by the MLSPA chief executive Bob Foose was frustration with what he called opportunistic attempts by the leagues to renegotiate CBA terms and invoke the force majeure clause, MLS “doomsday predictions about the coronavirus climate and its potential impact on the 2020 season, Garber’s tough 30-day deadline, the lack of clarity about the off-season schedule and the leagues” apparent decision to negotiate through media.
The league invoked the force majeure clause in the CBA last month, which was ratified in June. Under the terms of the current CBA, the MLS can terminate the deal before the 30-day window expires. League owners have taken an aggressive stance in creating the deadline, which MLSPA says is not based on contractual mention of the prospect of locking players out multiple times.
Under the new deal, players must be at least 24 years old, have at least four years of league experience and have quality-free agency from 2026. The minimum salary for all players will rise from $113,400 in 2020 to $125,875 in 27 years. Players will receive the full salary regardless of the financial impact of COVID-19.
If approved, the way will be clear for the start of the 2021 season in early April. The players will receive 100 per cent of their salaries for the next MLS season in 2021 in return for remaining with the CBA until 2027. If the players’ request is granted, there will be no changes to free agency from 2026.
After the announcement of a modernizing league, the MLSPA expressed its gratitude for modernizing the league to protect current and future players. The announcement of the new CBA follows years of negotiations to give MLS players a fair pay deal. The CBA is addressing the impact of COVID-19, modernising the media landscape and ensuring appropriate remuneration for professional footballers across the league.
While MLS fans, myself included, are pleased, it is important to note that this does not guarantee the inclusion of the MLS in eFootball as a full league.
